Some of the most famous sci-fi movies ever made feature complex endings, that either intentionally or not, left audiences with unanswered questions.
The heady concepts and intricate plots common to sci-fi movies can make their endings difficult to understand. 5 Annihilation Annihilation is both a gripping journey through a cosmic horror landscape and a chilling portrait of the effects of trauma and grief on the psyche. The “shimmer” can be understood as both an alien entity and the metaphorical embodiment of the grief that has afflicted Lena after the presumed death of her husband, Kane. At the film’s end, Lena and Kane reunite, but are unable to tell if they are really themselves, or if they have been fully replaced by the shimmer.
