When Stephen Sondheim wrote those lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s— and today “gay” has an entirely different meaning than it did 60-odd years ago. Sondheim was in fact discussing the allure of artifice, the power of gilding the lily — the seductive authority of sparkling gems, or even, why not? — a sparkling sweater.

Or dazzle in a dramatic red Prada which not only sports bejeweled sleeves and bodice but —wait for it—furry purple shoulder patches.
