A look at what starts as a rare quiet moment in Sam Mendes’s 1917, but turns into something visceral and harrowing

The film opens with a chatty, warm conversation between our two hero soldiers, played byand as the two make their way into enemy territory to deliver a vital message, their connection becomes an integral part of the story.
As the scene ends, you can spot a disagreement between the two that speaks to both of their characters. Lance Corporal Blake, played by Chapman, is the less battle-tested and more sympathetic of the two. As the German soldier they rescue from the plane crash suffers in agony, Blake wants to bring him water, while MacKay’s more experienced Schofield is inclined to put the soldier out of his misery.
