Oak Park and River Forest High School students Grace Koch and Mateo Nery will be the first students ever to receive mentorship by researchers from COLDEX (Center for Oldest Ice Exploration), school officials announced earlier this month.

Oak Park and River Forest High School senior Mateo Nery, pictured, is one of the first high school students in history to have the opportunity to be mentored by researchers from COLDEX , school officials announced Nov. 3, 2022. Nery is enrolled in the Investigative Research Design and Innovation course at OPRFHS.

“They were so impressed with the level of the work the students did, as well as the fact that they reach out and work with expert researchers around the globe, that they agreed to potential mentorship,” Hennings told Pioneer Press. Koch, who says she is interested in nuclear engineering and environmental science, aims to center her research around developing a way to decrease the cost and increase the accessibility of equipment used in Arctic research.

“She has allowed me extensive creative freedom, and although it is difficult at times to develop and carry out a college level research project, it is the most rewarding thing that I have ever pursued,” Koch said.Koch says her mentors, which she said included professors from the U.S. Naval Academy and Texas A&M in addition to Rahilly and Skyer Jacob, a graduate student with COLDEX, are instrumental to her success.

“Right now, I live by the idea of seeking discomfort, and this research project allows me to do so. It is a totally new experience that I am so fortunate to learn and refine my scientific skills from,” Koch stated. “I am also grateful as a Latina female to have the distinguished opportunity to combine my passions for additive manufacturing and innovation and be the first high school student to work with COLDEX. I am forever humbled.
