Our Kia Seltos long-term test SUV punched well above its weight.
we weren't sure what to make of it. Sized like the subcompact Kia Soul but styled similarly to the larger Kia Sportage, the Seltos split the difference between cutesy subcompact crossovers and more traditional off-road SUVs. Although the Seltos is primarily designed to roam asphalt, we were happy to find that no matter what we threw at our Seltos over the past year, it came off as the perfect mix of willing and refined.
Our primary long-term Seltos S Turbo is a quick and cheap way to access Kia's punchy 1.6-liter turbocharged I-4, a 175-hp and 195 lb-ft upgrade over the stock 146-hp 2.0-liter I-4. The powertrain is among the most fun in the subcompact SUV market, and Kia has done an admirable job at making the Seltos feel smooth, strong, and refined.We appreciated the Kia's engine, but our Seltos' cargo area got more of a workout than any of its 175 ponies ever did.
Despite the varying duties we tasked our Seltos with, it proved mechanically reliable and economical to run. The Seltos made two visits to the dealership for scheduled maintenance during our test, and both were without hassle. The work was performed without an appointment, the two dealers used proved to be polite and efficient, and absent was any attempt to charge unnecessary service add-ons.
