U.S. records third-costliest year for weather and climate related disasters, exceeding $165 billion in damages, NOAA scientist says.

The shoreline along the Crane Mill peninsula on Canyon Lake shows Jan. 5, 2023 the 10 foot drop in the lake's level as last year's drought and virtually non-existent Guadalupe River inflows have dropped the lake to 79.4 percent full, according to the Texas Water Development Board's Water Data for Texas website.Last year's global surface temperature tied 2015 as the fifth warmest on record, NASA announced Thursday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had a slightly different number — the sixth warmest year — but both agreed that the trend is going in the wrong direction. And Mother Nature is responding "These frequent and increasingly costly, extreme events have human consequences and pack an economic punch," Sarah Kapnick, NOAA's chief scientist, said."The U.S. had its third costliest year for weather and climate related disasters on record, exceeding $165 billion in damages.". Hail storms pummeled Texas in April, flooding inundated Kentucky and Missouri in July and Hurricane Ian devastated Southwest Florida in September.
