The awards recognize unsung heroes who go well beyond their expected duties to help their communities.
Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard, the National Jefferson Awards are the country's longest standing and most prestigious celebration of public service. He says the award's goal is simple--to encourage others to do more good in their communities.
This year's 51st National Ceremony was held last week in New York City, where nominees who were picked to represent states across the country attended to share their inspiring stories."Purpose is more powerful than object, and all of us can help better our communities every day in the smallest way by being consistent and encouraging somebody," said Kingsley.
