The family that ran Tarahumara off Colfax has taken over the eatery that shuttered in 2020 after more than seventy years in business.
"That was delicious," says a patron as he and a group of lunch companions leave the newly-reopened 20th Street Cafe in downtown Denver."We're glad this place is back."The well-loved eatery closed in April 2020, another victim of both the pandemic and bad timing.
But it's been a long haul to re-open the doors — longer than the new owners first thought. A sign on the door had been up for over a year announcing the plan to take over the classic space, but the windows looking out on the street remained papered-over."It ended up taking about a year and a half," says Carrasco. Why?"The City," she answers.
For those who loved Tarahumara's food, rest assured that it has carried over the whole menu from the old location. That includes its super-popular handheld breakfast burritos for only $4 . Carrasco says its specialty is the Steak a la Tampiquena, a rib-eye with grilled onions served with a cheese enchilada, beans, rice and tortillas.
Carrasco says the new menu is something of a balancing act, doing the things they're used to doing well, and respecting what's come before at the same time. But it's an effort that's clearly worth it, and appreciated by customers who've missed the old place being open.
