Once they are temporarily settled in Regina, the refugees will be connected with housing supports and possible employment opportunities.
A man wearing lime green shorts waved as he entered Saskatchewan for possibly the first time. A younger family behind him carried a duffle bag with a Canadian flag as they held the hand of their young daughter.
“They’re having a long, tired and emotional flight today,” said MLA Terry Dennis, the legislative secretary responsible for Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations, prior to the flight landing on Monday. “For me personally, it’s emotional because my grandparents came from Ukraine and many people have connections to Ukraine, so it’s going to be emotional.”
Once the plane lands on the tarmac and refugees go through customs, they will be housed at the University of Regina campus for 14 days as they find more permanent accommodations. Dennis said the province has spent roughly $1 million in helping Ukrainian refugees move to Saskatchewan.
