“I would encourage everyone to find a mentor who can shine a light in their path,” shares journalist, Mariana Atencio. “Preferably someone more experienced and in your same industry or field.” Atencio, Galeana, and Chef Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins, who is now an executive chef and partner at El Jardin share their advice below for anyone navigating the beginnings of their career.During her initial job search Atencio came up against many barriers — including, but not limited to, the fact that the country was in a recession and she would need a visa to stay in the country. The transition between grad and employed journalist taught her how to navigate other seasons in her career.

“Initially, I wanted to join the Peace Corps but the reality was that I had to help my parents pay the bills,”. “I wasn’t sure about college and couldn’t finance it anyway. My passion was really in the creative field and I wanted to ensure that if I studied anything, it would be in that space. I looked into the different military branches and the Air Force seemed to be the best option because it provided skills and training that would transfer over to the civilian world as well.
