Karla Martinez de Salas' shares what her decades long career in media has taught her.
She credits watching her father’s career as a heart surgeon with teaching her about tenacity and being her mother’s daughter with having a deeply ingrained sense of responsibility for her community.
Below Martinez de Salas shares advice for the next generation of Latinx who are working to make a name for themselves in the media and editorial industry.“I didn’t realize how much it impacted me until I started reflecting back on specific moments when my background was discussed by others,” shares Martinez de Salas.
“Mexico and many parts of the world are still working on full representation of all people,” explains Martinez de Salas. “Vogue is looked at as the decider of beauty in this industry, it has always been important to me to use my position wisely in widening the definition of beauty. I want little girls that feel or look different to see themselves in our pages and on our covers. We’ve really pushed boundaries and made progress in showcasing the amazing beauty in many different faces.
“Start now [and] do the thing that you think you want to do,” explains Martinez de Salas. “If you love telling stories, start writing or telling them. Don’t let the lack of a job or title stop you. Use your curiosity, interests and grit to build an undeniable portfolio of work that speaks for itself. And when ready, make the call. Email and follow up. Show up for the moment and send thank you notes. Also, be kind and be bold.
