Some Democrats believe that Amash, who left the GOP earlier this year, will be more effective than members of their own party in reaching conservative voters.

Several unnamed Democratic officials with knowledge of the campaign told the newspaper that the group of first-term lawmakers, spearheaded by Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips from Minnesota, has urged House leaders to consider appointing the former Republican for the role.

"To the extent that this can be bipartisan, it should, and I think including Representative Amash amongst the impeachment managers is a smart move both for the country, for the substance and for the optics," Phillips said, adding that the congressman was"the first and only member of the Republican conference, when he was a Republican, to show courage."

As congressional Republicans continue to loyally rally behind Trump amid the ongoing impeachment process, Amash has repeatedly taken to social media in recent months to call for the president's impeachment and assert that he has engaged in improper behavior.
