Multiple injuries and illnesses have limited Brown’s offseason growth during each of the last two years and that has primarily been felt on the offensive end. He averaged less than two shots per game during his three seasons and was 43 for 70 from inside the 3-point line and 21 for 76 from deep. He had three double-digit scoring games, all during his second season, and just one of them came against a Big Ten team.
Defensive impacts are hard to quantify, but Brown had the fifth-highest defensive rating among the Buckeyes last season according to EvanMiya.com. With center Zed Key sidelined for the final nine games of the season due to a shoulder injury, Brown was thrust into the role of small-ball center and even had to spend time trying to slow 7-4 Purdue center Zach Edey.As mentioned, Brown was known much more for his defensive abilities than his scoring during his three years at Ohio State.
An offseason injury in the spring and then a concussion suffered early in practice again stunted Brown’s development leading into this season,. For all those reasons, it’s likely Ohio State never saw Brown’s full offensive potential.
