The rise of fentanyl is no longer a secret, so recognizing the symptoms of an overdose shouldn’t be either.
The drug, 50 times more potent than heroin, is killing hundreds of California teenagers every year. Here are five things to look for to detect if someone is in trouble. Most importantly, experts say, if you have any reason to believe someone is in distress from fentanyl poisoning, don’t hesitate to call 911 — and, if it’s available, administer naloxone, the nasal spray commonly known as Narcan, that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
When the receptors are overwhelmed by opioids, it can make it hard to breathe properly. In particularly dire cases, you will sometimes hear the person, followed by a very distinctive, gurgling sound coming from their throat. This sound is often referred to as the “Death Rattle,” and as its name implies, it’s extremely serious.
