Five years after Hurricane Irma wrecked homes across Jacksonville, repairs to some are still underway thanks to money from a state disaster fund.
The groups’ help became a lifeline for some older, poorer homeowners to stay in their houses, with the recovery organization noting that “many low to moderate income households were either uninsured or underinsured, with limited finances and little to no savings.”
“We cannot thank people enough for their generosity," First Lady Casey DeSantis said in a statement that pledged the money “will be deployed quickly and effectively to meet the immediate needs of those most impacted by the storm.” After the storm, a building contractor replaced asbestos shingles with wood siding and started work on the home’s interior, but payments from Porter’s insurance company ran out before repairs were completed and Porter said the builder disappeared.
Volunteer Florida was allowing Endeavors to use a chunk of money, $200,500, that had been unavailable when the nonprofit shut down operations in Jacksonville.
