Behind D1 college athlete diets and spending:

Housed in the new $23 million, 55,000-square-foot Jerry & Gene Jones Family Student-Athlete Success Center, Arkansas’ sports nutrition department spares no expense in feeding its athletes. Members of any sports team, even those not on scholarship, are provided two meals a day, in an effort to “fuel and refuel” the athletes.

. While dishing out the big bucks on dining may have no immediate financial benefit to a school, in fact it costs more, well-fueled athletes have a certain advantage when competing, bolstering the program’s reputation as a result. And that translates to best-in-class recruitment and even higher ticket sales.

Head Coach Chad Morris of the Arkansas Razorbacks leads his team onto the field before the annual Spring Game at Razorback Stadium on March 6, 2019 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It takes a lot of food to satiate hundreds of hungry student-athletes. In fact, it took 6,800 gallons of milk, 2,120 pounds of beef jerky, and 1,504,512 cherries to feed Iowa athletes over the last year, according to Iowa Director of Sports Nutrition Nicole White.

“We all know everyone on the football team loves pizza, burgers and chicken tenders,” says Jessica Blatchley, Sodexo’s executive chef for sports performance at West Virginia University. “I’m absolutely still going to give my football players a pizza, because that’s what is going to keep their body weight up, which is really important. A lot of guys come up to me at breakfast, and then I’ll see the same guy at dinner, and they’ll be like, ‘Ooh, good practice today, I lost 10 pounds.
