In addition to all its other cultural treasures, Cleveland is home to the Willott Iris Garden, one of the only iris collections free and open to the public. Located next to the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse, the garden has more than 600 varieties on display.

Lady in Red is one of the Willotts' most dazzling iris varietiesCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Among the fantastic museums in Cleveland and the University Circle area is an unusual outdoor exhibit staffed by two volunteers and a part-time curator. The unruly artifacts chase each other and occasionally disappear. When visitors move items in the night, the curator may need to wait up to a year before being able to re-identify them.

The irises are lovingly tended by Bob and Sandra Pindell, two volunteers who met Dorothy Willott in the mid-1990s, when Bob asked an online discussion forum dedicated to irises why his plants weren’t blooming. Dorothy responded that the problem was overcrowding, and she continued to help them expand their iris collection. From there, Bob says “things went downhill,” as the iris hobby became a full-blown passion. “If you don’t have a hobby that gets out of hand, you don’t have a hobby,” he adds.

In addition to beauty, irises endeared themselves to the Willotts and the Pindells because of their deer resistance and relative ease of growing. Deer will not eat irises, but they do occasionally pull plants out of the ground and drop them elsewhere. Once separated from its label, the iris becomes unidentified, or a “NoID,” and the Willott Garden team must wait until the flower blooms again to re-identify and label it.

Visitors to the Willott Iris Garden are shown around by the dedicated volunteers, Bob and Sandra Pindell, and curator, Ron Hartmiller
