It's been nearly 50 years since snow settled downtown.
While for many younger San Franciscans the sight of snow in the city may seem absurd, older residents might remember when the downtown streets turned white more regularly, on three separate occasions in 25 years. The archives reveal that while snow has fallen in the city many times, it's only actually settled in downtown San Francisco fives times: December 1882, February 1887, February 1951, January 1962 and, most recently, Feb. 5, 1976.
The 1887 event was a relative blizzard, leaving a whopping 7 inches of powder in the western reaches of the city. The depth at California Street in Pacific Heights was measured at more than 6 inches, and 3.7 inches were seen downtown — more than double any other year since records began. More recently, in December 1998, a flurry of snow surprised residents, but didn't settle in the city limits."It was falling thick for about five minutes," Twin Peaks resident Jerry Kirwanthis week's cold frontKids make snowballs near Lands End in San Francisco.
