The San Diego Union-Tribune's series that examined the mental health crisis in San Diego drew several responses and calls to action

Some readers recognized their own struggles in the stories of strangers. They included exhausted parents and frustrated staffers.

The person said they were initially misdiagnosed, and “was getting sicker, breaking windows, phones, inviting homeless people into my home.” A family member helped push for the right diagnosis. Now she is back at work and saving money for a condo, and says “recovery is possible.” The father of a woman diagnosed with schizophrenia emailed to say that just calling San Diego County’s mental health problem a crisis “has been a game changer.”

And the mother of a mentally ill person featured in the series said “even I am shocked at how many people are affected by mental health and how many are suffering.” A clinician said on Instagram she would like to see a full documentary on the 72-hour hold, adding that she and colleagues in the field face “so many limitations” when trying to stabilize patients who need long-term care.
