Poll also finds that Texans' attitude toward promoting racial diversity has plummeted since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gun control measures, including raising the purchasing age, have stalled before the Legislature, and the state's Republican leadership have repeatedly said they do not have interest in such policies. The survey found that 76 percent of Texans are in favor of raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, including 91 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans.

Asked which factor respondents blame most for school shootings like in Uvalde and in Santa Fe in 2018, the top response was"insufficient restrictions on gun ownership," at 24 percent. Second place was lack of mental health resources, at 11 percent.A bill to raise the purchase age for assault-style rifles was heard before a Texas House committee in mid April, but it is unlikely to pass.

Many Republicans and gun rights advocates contend the proposal is unconstitutional, infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. Gov. Greg Abbott has said as much, though legal experts say it’s an unsettled question.
