A resident came to the Westlake Police Department on Oct. 13 to report being the victim of a scam. The 79-year-old woman had been searching online in connection with her job when she received pop-up messages indicating that her Apple computer had been hacked due to being on an unsecured website.

The victim said she used Google to find a phone number for “Apple support,” which she called. The fake support person said that the victim’s account was “severely compromised,” and she needed to share her screen with their IT person to fix problems. The scammer talked the victim into visiting local stores to buy gift cards.Officers at 7 a.m. on Oct. 17 responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Westwood Road.
