Former NYPD detective and 9/11 first responder Luis Alvarez, who advocated on Capitol Hill for compensation for 9/11 victims, was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony today. He was 53.
Luis Alvarez, a former New York City police detective who worked at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks and fought for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, was remembered for his"tenacity and resilience" at a solemn and emotional funeral on Wednesday.
"Before he came an American hero, he was mine," his eldest son, David Alvarez, said at the service."The one above all I wanted to make proud." On June 11, Alvarez joined former"Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, and dozens of 9/11 first responders to demand that Congress fully fund the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund that was set up for police, firefighters and others who worked at Ground Zero."This fund is not a ticket to paradise," he said of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund."It's there to provide to our families when we aren't there.
He exemplified the NYPD motto, “Fidelis Ad Mortem” or “Faithful Unto Death.” Detective Lou Alvarez has lost his battle with 9/11-related cancer. An inspiration, a warrior, a friend—we will carry his sword. https://t.co/utRphj7owx
