Joseph Potenzano, 93, and Mary Elkind, 83, are planning a fall wedding.
Joseph Potenzano and Mary Elkind met at a wedding 64 years ago and then went their separate ways. Now, they plan to be married in October. There’s an old saying that love will find a way. Even if it takes the long way.
“I thought he was cute,” recalls Mary, giggling at the memory of Joseph in his younger years. “After the wedding, we went out, but only a few times.” He got a job at Picatinny Arsenal, working with rocket engines and artillery shells. “Basically, making sure that the warheads hit the target,” he said, adding that the 22 years he spent at Picatinny were the height of his professional career.
“I was lonely, and I had very few friends left,” said Joseph, looking back to a year ago. “But I decided that being lonely was not an option I was willing to die with.” “The best part was when we both had to get up,” Joseph recalled. “I grabbed her by the hand and walked down the aisle. Then her niece came by and we just dropped hands. We didn’t want them to see anything because it was our first time.”There was more to come. Since then, there have been countless phone calls, movies and dinner. They were hanging out at Joseph’s house one day when he got up the nerve to pop the question – well, sort of.
