Eagle Mining Company, in the tiny Southern California town of Julian, is an example of the kind of prospecting that didn’t make the miners rich.
For the early years of the Eagle and High Peak mines, they didn't have carts, so all the mined rocks had to be removed by hand.“This is all the light you’d have in here for one person,” my guide said, holding out a tiny candle that would have sat inside a miner’s headlamp.
