A call to restore civil discourse | Opinion

Our debate around important ideas — whether they be about politics, religion, education, health care, indeed the very nature of what it means to be a human being — has sunk to new lows. Perhaps it is a byproduct of our Twitter age; perhaps it is an education system that has moved in the direction of valuing the transfer of information over the cultivation of wisdom and character.
Being countercultural requires us to think first about the state of our current culture. Hardly anyone I know, whether center, right or left, would diagnose the climate in which we find ourselves as “healthy.
And that leads to my third bit of advice: Reclaim the ability to engage in rational discourse. What is rational discourse, and why is it healthy? Because, very simply, these goods make us better human beings. Better colleagues. Better siblings. Better friends. Better citizens. America has long been a beacon of hope, notwithstanding the deep divisions that exist today, because we embrace liberties that are fundamental to a healthy society: the exercise of free speech, the free practice of religion, the freedom to assemble.
