The returning Doctor Who showrunner gushes about working with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson on the set of the upcoming season of the sci-fi series.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies teases what fans can expect from the upcoming season. Davies was instrumental in the 2005 revival of the long-running British sci-fi series, which follows the adventures of a Time Lord who has the ability to regenerate their form, and is now returning after many years away from the property.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Radio Times recently sat down with Davies to discuss the upcoming Doctor Who season 14. The showrunner revealed that he feels like he's eagerly keeping an exciting secret from the audience. In addition to praising Gatwa and Millie Gibson, his Doctor's companion, the showrunner said that the new season presents "a completely new Doctor, and yet a Doctor utterly faithful to the 60 years that came before.
Sometimes you know you've got a secret. And you hold it close to your chest and let it burn, because secrets are so delicious. I've got that right now, because my secret is seeing Ncuti with Millie Gibson on the rushes of Doctor Who, every single day, and oh my God, this is so good! We'll all be dancing [when the secret is out. It's] a completely new Doctor, and yet a Doctor utterly faithful to the 60 years that came before.
Can Russell T. Davies Usher In A New Era Of Doctor Who Again? Presenting a Doctor Who season that brings freshness to the material while paying homage to what came before seems like a tall order. Considering the fact that there are over 750 episodes of the series, not including the 97 lost episodes, many of the stories that could possibly feature the Doctor have already been told. However, Davies proved he was able to do it once before.
Before Doctor Who returned with Christopher Eccleston in the lead in 2005, the show had already run through seven different Doctors between 1963 and 1989. However, Davies' jubilant take on the iconic title propelled the sci-fi series to even further international fame. Doctor Who has reached an even wider audience since then and made stars of many performers, including Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, who is now starring in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.
