They decided to arrange an air ambulance to Texas Children’s, which performs more than 1,000 heart surgeries on children each year, said, the hospital’s associate chief of congenital heart surgery. Half of those procedures involve children under a year old, and a quarter involve newborns, he said.Time was of the essence. Texas Children’s is a major referral center for complicated cases, so a referral team is in place to expedite the process of getting children to the hospital.

Doctors told Castro and Carvajal they would either need to repair Arturo's heart valve or replace it altogether. They couldn’t say for sure until the day of the operation, which they scheduled for Dec. 2.
