'We created a travel company, not a luggage brand,' says Jen Rubio, who was inspired to launch Away when her suitcase broke open in the Zurich airport.

Every morning at 6 a.m., Jen Rubio, 32, co-founder and chief brand officer of travel gear startup Away, wakes to the melodic alarm sounds of sleep app Pzizz and works out on her Peloton bike. “I need a solid hour of alone time to prepare for what’s ahead of me that day,” she says.

Rubio, who calls both San Francisco and New York home, spends her days at product-review sessions, photo shoots and new-hire happy hours.
