Was this the first case of aerial murder in United States history?
Public DomainResidents of Venice Beach were used to seeing DeLay’s trim biplanes zipping around the coastline. He was one of the most famous young pilots in America, a stylish daredevil who was in high demand among Hollywood directors. Along with flying regular commuter routes, a new luxury in 1920s America, he loved putting on stunt shows for holidays and special events.
In 1920, DeLay took over general manager duties at Thomas Ince Airport in Venice. His fleet of five planes were “busy all day long,” the Venice Vanguard reported, with DeLay himself flying many of the routes. He took sightseers up for flights along the California coast, ran a passenger route from Venice to San Diego and put on frequent airshows. In May 1920, he even staged a fake battle over the Venice Pier, complete with death-defying tail spins and “many bombs” dropped into the ocean.
But DeLay was a pioneer in more ways than one. In July 1921, he signed a deal with chewing gum maven William Wrigley Jr., to provide air access to Wrigley’s island paradise Catalina. The Vanguard called the route “the most valuable one in the United States. It gives DeLay not only the exclusive right to carry passengers between the island and the mainland, but also the exclusive right to carry passengers on short trips above the island.
