Women are 50% more likely than men to never accept their doctor’s recommendation to take statins. Medical experts say that can lead to real consequences: Those who refuse the medications are more likely to have a stroke or heart attack.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer worldwide. Twenty million U.S. adults have it. Yet, many patients are refusing one of medicine’s best tools for addressing the condition.in JAMA Network Open, found that roughly 20% of high-risk patients don’t take statins, even when their doctor recommends them. Statins are a group of cholesterol-lowering medications, taken as a daily pill, that have been shown to protect against heart attacks and strokes.
"So we conducted a population-based study that involved over 24,000 people. We looked at the data in electronic medical records over nearly 20 years. And we found that, in fact, this is common. Are these differences between women and men a result of them having different medical conditions? Say, one group is more likely to get diabetes or heart disease.
"We don't have anything much better than statins and, certainly, we don't have anything that has the combination of low-cost, effective and safe.""We really need to work out how best to get the message across to patients. We need to be able to answer the patient's questions, if they have concerns.
Are there drawbacks, side effects or reasons that patients legitimately wouldn’t want to take statins?
