‘A fundraising tour de force’: Harrisburg resident to be honored for 70 years of community service

Homeland Center will celebrate its 155th anniversary of serving central Pennsylvania, and pay tribute to Betty Hungerford on Sunday, May 15, 2022, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Hilton Harrisburg.

Hungerford, 89, said she awakens every morning eager to identify needs in the community and dive into work as director of development for the“I never wake up thinking ‘oh my God I have to go to work.’ I’m always thinking what are we going to do today,” said Hungerford. “I have a lot of enthusiasm and I always felt that way coming here.”

A graduate of Palmyra Area High School, she began volunteering for community-based organizations while she was a student at Lebanon Valley College.After receiving her bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration in 1954, she married fellow LVC alumnus Paul Hungerford, who died Oct. 2010.

“I really learned the skill of raising money as a volunteer. And consequently, I encouraged other people to volunteer because they can find not only the joy of doing that but also discover a career path you might not be aware of,” said Hungerford. “Interesting thing enough, I never thought I’d be in senior healthcare because my experience was in acute care,” said Hungerford.
