The first phone rang in the Dallas County Elections Department just as the reddish light ofCounty elections administrator Michael Scarpello and his team spent months preparing for that call. It signaled the start of a seemingly-endless buzz of elections operators, technicians and sheriff’s deputies troubleshooting issues across the county’s 462 polling stations.
The Elections Department’s biggest day of the year looks like a 24-hour sprint. The office multiplies each election from around 50 full-time employees to more than 4,000 workers stationed across every corner of the county. Phone operators work to monitor the midterm elections at the Dallas County Election Department in Dallas on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.
In other areas, workers take calls and dole out tech advice. Many come and go to grab snacks and energy drinks for the long day.
