Kombucha brewers in San Diego are serving up flavors and fusions from jalapeno strawberry lime to blood orange mint, with hard kombucha versions and non-alcoholic kombucha.

Living Tea Brewing Co. claims to be the first Kombucha brewery in San Diego County. The Oceanside-based company officially opened its doors on April 1, 2014, but the first kombucha batch came out in 2009 with its Brewmaster Neil Gehrke. Back then, the company was called Kokua Kombucha.

In 2011, Gehrke partnered with Josh and Bill Weigel to grow the company and incorporate operations into a restaurant in Oceanside. And in 2014, the kombucha company traded its collaboration kitchen for what owners say is the county’s first kombucha tasting room in Oceanside and became Living Tea Brewing Co.

The company makes over 30 different seasonal kombucha flavors throughout the year, based on the tea and fruit that are in season. The staple brews that tend to stay on tap are ginger, turmeric, pear chai, blood orange, strawberry, lavender peach, guava and passion fruit from Jason’ Mraz’s farm in Oceanside. Living Tea also has a keto-friendly kombucha and is planning to launch its first alcoholic kombucha by the end of 2023.

You can get the various kombucha flavors at its Oceanside tasting room that are available on tap. The tasting room has an intimate bar setting inside and a private outside dining area. It also has a kitchen which is operated by ERIS Food Co. and serves vegan dishes, sandwiches and more.
