A half-century later the Santos Rodriguez murder remains the open wound of Dallas | Opinion

Officer Cain, playing Russian roulette, pulled the trigger and virtually assassinated Santos, shooting him in the head and killing him instantly, splattering his brains and blood inside the police car and over his brother David, who had been told to sit in the back of the vehicle next to Cain.

reported that President Jimmy Carter even asked Attorney General Griffin B. Bell in 1978 if he would review whether Cain should be federally prosecuted. But the Justice Department declined to further prosecute Cain, citing concerns about due process and how the officer had already been convicted of the “highest degree of murder” in a trial that was “prompt and vigorous.” A civil lawsuit seeking close to $475,000 in damages was also unsuccessful.

We have political figures across the country today, including some here in Texas, who now advocate that we as a society should forget the past and not discuss painful episodes of our national and local history. They would re-victimize those who suffered and died at the hands of injustice, whether it was administered by a lawless mob or law enforcement officials.
