California residents may find themselves swatting at more mosquitoes this summer than in past years.
Joao Paulo Burini/Getty ImagesThe state’s landscape, which is waterlogged after an unusually wet winter, is expected to provide ideal conditions for the blood-feasting insects to reproduce as temperatures warm up in the coming months.
Grinter said mosquito population growth will likely be more common in Southern California, where summers are hotter, as opposed to the Bay Area, where cooler temperatures and fog limit numbers. The San Francisco Department of Public Health told SFGATE that mosquito numbers in San Francisco are normally low. The department said it is too early to tell what effect the recent storms will have on the populations, but it’ll continue to monitor activity.
Grinter and several other experts said it’s going to be important to monitor standing water to minimize the mosquito boom. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.
