... [+]Shaking off the cold, I jump into my Lyft and strike up a conversation with my driver, Alex. Alex and his wife, Lee, worked for decades knowing they would retire someday. As Alex describes her, Lee, an accountant, was obsessive about saving for their life together in retirement. They shared dreams of travel, time with grandchildren, and tennis. In short, retirement was their reward and chance to do all the things they never had time for while working and raising a family.

Today’s prevailing retirement story describes a relatively short and simple life stage of newfound freedom and leisure followed by the challenges of older age and end of life. However, retirement is not nearly as short as it was when invented for our grandparents and great grandparents. Retirement is a story about an entire life stage. Like most stories, there is some fact, and often a fair amount of literary license. The facts include the reality of needing lifetime income after full time work. But, today’s retirement planning story must also add several chapters of imaginative, yet realistic, planning that go well beyond financial security and goal-setting alone.
