In 2013, Simpson decided to join the Colorado staff as a volunteer assistant coach when she returned to Boulder to be guided by college coaches Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs again after a two-year stint in Colorado Springs under coach Juli Benson.
It’s a symbiotic relationship, though: By training together on a daily basis—Jones especially has been a consistent training partner of Simpson’s—both volunteer coach and college runners benefit. With years of success, challenges, triumphs and everything in-between, Simpson wants to use her insight as an opportunity to guide the next generation. This past season, Jones needed that more than ever.in a gritty kick to the finish line in Madison, Wisconsin. The performance was an impressive feat, which also led the Buffaloes to a team title.
“She [Simpson] reminded me, ‘This is what you prayed for for so long, to be back running, so even when it hurts or you’re not doing well, just appreciate it and know that God has done a lot more with a lot less,’” Jones toldShe returned to the starting line in April with a victory in the 1500 meters at the Jack Christiansen Invitational, and gained momentum at the Pac-12 Championships with a conference win and personal best in the 5K.
