🎭 Tuckie White's Motherhouse at RivendellThtr packs a lot of fascinating stories into a small container. | ✍️ Kelly Kleiman
begins with a recently bereaved daughter struggling to write her mother’s eulogy. Her mother’s four sisters arrive to help with the task but instead reenact every unresolved family trauma. Under the direction of Azar Kazemi, the Rivendell ensemble flawlessly embodies these women and their complicated relationships, but at the end we’re left wondering what it was all about.
Instead, each sister’s maladaptation is displayed in turn, with true-to-life humor or pathos or both, followed by the daughter’s complete meltdown, which despite Jessica Ervin’s brilliant performance seems to come out of nowhere. The problem is 30 pounds of story in a five-pound bag, the family saga ofcompressed into 95 minutes. Perhaps playwright Tuckie White was hampered by the common female fear of demanding too much attention, holding the stage for too long.
