The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, home to one of the world’s major collections of Peter Paul Rubens, will reopen on Sept. 24 after 11 years of renovations
When the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp was built in the 1880s, it took just six years to complete the grand, columned building that dominates the southern part of the Belgian city. The museum closed down for much-needed renovations in 2011, and 11 years later—after budgetary impasses, construction delays and the mounting frustration of Antwerp’s residents—it is finally due to reopen on Sept. 24.
The museum is known internationally for a collection that includes masterpieces by the Flemish Baroque painters Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck and the diabolical Belgian modernist James Ensor. The 100-million-euro renovation has restored the historical galleries where the museum’s Old Masters are displayed and added new white-on-white galleries for artworks after 1880.
