This article contains spoilers for Rick and Morty #8 Throughout Rick and Morty canon, Rick Sanchez has made it clear that he despises gods and magic, and values only what he can achieve through science. It was always assumed that Rick thought this way because he truly just thinks those things are stupid, and he can prove how stupid they are simply by being smarter than them.
Other than the planned assassination of the Judeo-Christian God, Rick and Morty has only ever had one deity die on-screen, and that was the Zeus named Reggie Rick battled for the love of Gaia and the right to raise her children. While technically it was Morty and Summer who killed the god, Rick was the one who initiated the conflict, setting Reggie up for death.

Initially, Rick is nowhere to be found, so these gods instead wreak havoc upon his homeworld for the sheer joy of tormenting the mortals who no longer worship them.
Rick is the smartest person in the universe, but he is just a mortal man. Sure, he can invent gadgets and weapons that can kill deities and obliterate entire worlds, but he still needs those gadgets and weapons to do so. Gods inherently hold that level of power, and while Rick can surpass them with his inventions, his base-form is nothing compared to theirs. Not only are gods physically more powerful than Rick is without his tech, but they are also worshiped and adored by those who love them.
This Rick and Morty issue reveals that Rick doesn’t just hate gods and their effortless magic because he thinks they’re stupid, or because he knows he’s superior to them, he does so because he’s jealous, of both their power and of the love they receive - love that Rick will never allow himself to know.
