Texans leadership reacted to the death of original team president Jamey Rootes, who led the franchise's business operations for 20 years. Here's what they said.

, the first team president of the Houston Texans, the franchise’s leadership met personally with reporters Tuesday to express their feelings and share their respect for the former executive.

Rootes’ wife Melissa on Monday shared on social media the news of her late husband’s death Sunday, and Texans owner Janice McNair, CEO and chair Cal McNair and his wife, Hannah, released a statement late Monday sharing their condolences. “It’s a sad day for us here at the Texans,” Cal McNair said Tuesday. “We’re really heartbroken. The loss of our friend, Jamey Rootes, our 20-year-old friendship. Jamey led the Houston Texans’ business department at a very high level for two decades. He was also really involved with Houston and giving back and one of his favorites was United Way. So, he’ll be missed by his Texans family.

Cal’s father, the late Bob McNair, founded the Texans in 1999 and hired Rootes, a native of Stone Mountain, Ga., to be the first team president of Houston’s new NFL franchise. The Texans, who began play in 2002, recorded 185 consecutive sellouts and won several marketing awards during Rootes’ 20-year tenure, and the Houston Texans Foundation, which he oversaw, raised more than $36 million since its inception.

Rootes was a co-chair for the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund, which raised more than $17 million for families and individuals in the city. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Rootes helped lead the Texans’ joint efforts with the NFL and United Way to raise more than $50 million for relief efforts in affected areas.
