A shadowy elite built his wealth by cutting down trees but then ironically preserved his property to become a park.

Indigenous inhabitants lived on the land well before the park was dubbed “Huddart.” The Ohlone came first, followed by Spanish colonizers. After the arrival of white European settlers, lumberman James Huddart acquired the approximately 900-acre property at the turn of the 20th century. At the time, many wealthy San Francisco families were buying up property in the Woodside area for their vacation homes, a period known as the"summer cabin era.

Beyond that, little is known about the park’s namesake. He’s a mystery — at least for someone who has their name on a prominent Peninsula park and was part of the Bay Area elite during a time when the region was rapidly expanding. "There have been other rumors," San Mateo County Parks ranger Katherine Wright told SFGATE."When you have somebody that is mysterious, people try to make up stories because you don’t have the information and fill in the gaps."
