Conductor Greg Hobbs combines church choir singers and freelance orchestra musicians in an impressive performance.
Conductor Greg Hobbs combined singers from four church choirs and freelance orchestra musicians in a well-disciplined performance.
Presented as a grand finale in Highland Park Presbyterian’s 2021-22 Highlander Concert Series, the performance was assembled, rehearsed and conducted by Greg Hobbs, the church’s music director. This continues a series of accomplished chorus-and-orchestra concerts he’s put together in recent seasons, even including two performances of English composer Herbert Howells’The Meyerson’s choral terrace wasn’t packed with singers, but it was well filled.
If anything, Hobbs repeatedly seemed to favor the orchestra at the expense of both chorus and soloists. And although both chorus and orchestra were well-disciplined, each soloist seemed mostly left to him- or herself, without a truly shared conception of the music. More attention from Hobbs might have helped. Some unaccompanied quartet passages — they’re tricky — drifted out of tune.
