The bride and groom met on Instagram.
, Equipment, and Kirsten Dunst as clients—met Christopher Hench, owner of his own metal fabrication company, on Instagram . “He came out to L.A. for a long weekend in December of 2014 and was meant to go back to New York the following Tuesday,” Ashley remembers. “But he never went back to the city, and two years later we were engaged.”
Two weeks after Ashley met Christopher, her father was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. “Christopher was instrumental in my dad’s treatment and helping my family throughout the entire process,” says Ashley. “My dad died almost exactly one year to the date of meeting Christopher, and part of his ashes were spread in Joshua Tree, because he loved it there, too. After Christopher proposed to me, it was a no-brainer . . . if we were going to have a wedding, we would have to have it in Joshua Tree.
The bride’s wardrobe was just as personal. From the beginning, there was never any question: She was always going to wear Rodarte. “I have worked closely with Kate and Laura since the early years, styling all of their shows, not to mention they are two of my best friends,” Ashley explains. “They are also my favorite designers, and I think anything they create tells a beautiful story. I always had said they would make me a dress if I met that special someone.
Like true fashion fairy godmothers, Kate and Laura also generously offered to make Ashley a look to change into for the reception. “My heart was always set on Look 20 from the same Spring 2017 show, but we felt like the red it was made in wasn’t right for the dusty browns, pinks, and lavenders of the desert,” says Ashley. They had a beautiful nude fabric with silver sequins that they used to make the look.
“Though my dad wasn’t physically there, his presence was felt all around—from little touches in the music and decorations to mentions in everyone’s speeches,” says Ashley. “Lastly, he was there in the big super moon that rose over the mountains as we ate dinner. It was crazy . . . just as we sat down I heard gasps from all of the tables and I got concerned, but then I realized everyone was pointing to the moon and standing up. It was magical.
