We chat with PawsOfFury star aasif about what drew him to the animated film, and what he loves about his cat character Ichiro:
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is a classic fish out of water story or, in this case, a dog in a cat's territory adventure. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies' new martial arts animated comedy, which can now be seen in theaters, involves a heroic canine on a mission to become a samurai. His harshest skeptics are none other than the cats he's tasked with, protecting including the sardonic Ichiro .
Your character is Ichiro in this world of samurai cats. What can you share Ichiro's role in the story of Paws of Fury? Ichiro and Chuck are some of the comic relief, they're sort of Laurel and Hardy-type characters, who come in with one-liners and quips and stuff, and they're part of the plot, but they're a little bit of the Greek chorus, and it's fun. They're kind of a throwback to Laurel and Hardy or Abbot and Costello with the routines they do, which was super fun, and so was getting with Gabriel Iglesias, as well, I've been a fan of his stand-up for many years. That was super fun.
Aasif Mandvi: Well, you know, with animation, they often show you a little rendition or something with the character, so as an actor, you can kind of bring whatever that drawing might inspire in you, in terms of how this character may talk or how you might breath life into this drawing.
