Less than 1,000 children have been separated from their parents at the southern border this fiscal year, Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan says
Washington Less than 1,000 children have been separated from their parents at the southern border this fiscal year, said Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan at a House panel hearing Thursday intended to review the administration's controversial"zero tolerance" policy.
"I want to start with the rare portion of this, fewer than 1000 juveniles have been separated from their parents crossing the border this fiscal year, that's with 450,000 crossings of family units," McAleenan said before the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee hearing. McAleenan has frequently appeared before lawmakers in his role as acting DHS secretary.
