We chat with JoyRide director Adele Lim (adeleblim) about what inspired her directorial debut, the advice she received from Jon Chu, and the cast's incredible comedic timing:
In Joy Ride, Audrey brings her childhood best friend Lolo with her to China for a business trip where they meet up with Audrey's college roommate and Lolo's eccentric cousin Deadeye. When the trip goes wrong, Audrey tries to salvage it by finding her birth mother with the help of her friends. The foursome runs into unexpected trouble along the way, growing closer and discovering more about themselves and each other while on this grand adventure full of debauchery.
Adele Lim: This movie came about because Cherry and Teresa, my co-writers and producers on this movie, we've been friends for a long time. We would just hang out together and crack each other out with nasty dating stories or stories from our friends, our completely unhinged, ridiculous friends. And we thought, "We're professional writers. We can put this movie together."
Adele Lim: I'm so glad you asked that question. I had to put myself through at home director school because we shot during the pandemic. I could not have done that without the mentorship of my dear director friends. First and foremost, Jon Chu, the director of Crazy Rich Asians, and he would spend hours on zoom with me.
Adele Lim: I wish I could take credit for that, but really it's a testament to our amazing cast and the genuine, authentic chemistry they have together. If you have interviewed them, if you have been in a restaurant with them, be prepared for a) noise complaints, and two) to have the best time of your life. They just had such an authentic, dynamic and relationship with each other and they brought that onto set every single day.
