Dog licensing fees, a major source of revenue for the bureau, have not increased for nearly three decades. Meanwhile, employee costs have increased by 125% and operating costs have increased by 221% within the bureau, which is part of the Department of Agriculture. Senate Bill 746 would increase the basic license fee for a spayed or neutered dog from $6.50 to $8 a year and from $31.50 to $80 for a lifetime license. It also includes a 25% increase in fees for each classification of kennel, which have not increased in 58 years.
“We’ve been talking about this for a long time,” Schwank said. “There are so many good aspects to this legislation. To me this is a major step forward.” The state police said the bill would better protect the public from dangerous dogs and improve rehoming of lost dogs.
