Herman Whitfield III's death renewed calls for clinician-led response teams to mental health situations. Here's what that could look like.
Pastor Richard Reynolds calls for action after the death of Indianapolis resident Herman Whitfield III, who died after an encounter with IMPD.Responding to calls from the community, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett in March pledged to implement a clinician-led mobile crisis team to respond to calls for help involving mental health situations in Indiana's capital city.emphasized core ideas on which he's based what he sees as recent progress in local criminal justice initiatives.
Denver's program, rolled out in June 2020, is largely an expansion of what officials call a"co-response program" the city has had in place since 2016 in which a licensed mental health clinician responds to a scene with police officers.
“We sort of have all of our bases covered across all, you know, the spectrum of acuity," Sailon said.Indianapolis made efforts in recent years to improve its handling of mental health situations. Community members hope Indianapolis' future program will be active 24/7."We know crisis doesn’t stop at midnight," said Josh Riddick, a community organizer for Faith In Indiana.
Indianapolis' City Connects program, Rodriguez added, lets the city work with school children and their families on mental health-related issues. Some of that programming could be implemented as soon as this year.
