How Walking Helped One Woman Recover From the Unimaginable
Then one day in February 2019, her phone rang. It was a friend of her youngest son, Charles , and he was calling with terrible news. “He told me, ‘you have to come right away, CJ collapsed on the pavement while walking his dog, and I don’t think he’s breathing,’” she recalls. In a panic, Cathy and Franklin raced to CJ’s house, which wasn’t too far from theirs. When they arrived, emergency personnel were working to resuscitate him, on the same square of sidewalk where he’d fallen face down.
The next few months were a blur. She lost weight. Dealing with the estate was mentally taxing. The holidays weren’t filled with joy, and being alone in the house where the family had made so many memories, surrounded by Franklin’s clothing and gadgets and favorite snacks, was almost unbearable. In 2020, when COVID-19 hit, things felt more impossible than ever. “I couldn’t wrap up the legal things because the courts were closed. I couldn’t get rid of this stuff.
But all that pavement pounding started to take its toll on Cathy’s body, so Susan suggested she test out Charge’s newest feature—scheduled walks—and alternate between running and walking. “It absolutely carried me—mentally, physically, emotionally—through the rest of 2020,” Cathy says. “I went out in the heat, the cold, the rain, and the snow.”
